From my journal: 13 February 2022

In, “All About Love: New Visions (Love song to the nation book 1)” bell hooks writes,”To live fully we would need to let go of our fear of dying. That fear can only be addressed by the love of living.”

Which reminds me that my mentor, William Loughborough, signed every email “Love” and is often credited as “Will B Love” (Blindless) or “Will Love” (THX 1138). One of his favorite phrases was “don’t pass go, don’t collect $200, follow your heart’s desire.”

as I slow down,
as I let go of the measuring stick of productivity,
as I learn to sit and listen to the birds, to chew my food without distraction,
as I focus the fire into a kiln-like flame instead of disparate coals smoldering

I begin to realize the training, the structure, the busyness that prevented me
from seeing
from feeling
how much life surrounds me
how much goodness,

I have been so hypnotized by obligation
By technology, news, excitement, busyness, striving,
“Everyone everywhere always connected.” What would William say now?

“And that’s the history of jazz….”
